Vernon, Smiffy and Albie's bro are in the team for this 13 a side non first class game. The early start and confusion about who can get in free seems to have made the starting crowd sparse. The grey conditions may keep it that way for what could become a South African net looking at their front end. But we won the toss so at least we'll get a bat first.

Who will be in this side? 15 have been announced but other names are floating about. We do know the 13 for the tourists and their front end is
Smith, Amla, Kallis, De Villiers, Duminy and Boucher. Suggests that if they get in against the bowling we will offer the game may stop effectively there.
Our side does not include Alf and Steve for definite but after that who knows. No sign of Dibble on any list and hopes of Marcus doing a stint in this game is also not on. EVERYONE else is up for a place. Presently the opening partnership is expected to be Arul and Alex.
NOW we know more;
The Somerset side sports SIXTEEN players so the eleven on the pitch will include some of;
Suppiah, Barrow, Compton, Hildreth (C), Buttler (W), Trego, Meschede, Leach, Waller, Gregory, Hussain, Jones, Dockrell, Overton C, Overton J, Regan (W)
As the South Africans do not have numbers on their kit and the scoreboards are all out of the way of the pressbox, apologies in advance for the commentary errors and the Cricinfo errors, no-ne really has a clue who the hell is playing! Steyn and Phillander have opened for the Saffers and the first run from the bat of Mr Suppiah arrives one bal before the end of the second over. 1 for 0 after 12 balls.
In the third over the daftness starts as the boys go for a second on the arm of Tsotsobe and Arul doesn't make it to the non strikers end... 2 for 1 and in comes Compo. Ohhh dear!
And it gets better as Nick takes a risky single, which is so risky he loses his middle stump as Duminy throws down with the Somerset man a yard short. Two run outs and nearly 4 overs gone!! 6 for 2 - ohhh dear ohhh dear!
Jos arrives to hopefully cause some upset but shoulders arms to Tsotsobe and hears the clip of his leg bail so we are in deep do do before 12 overs are up (Alex had already been caught behind before this little piece of wonderful cricket). 32 for 4.
Then the game changes!! Mornie Morkel to the new batsman Peter Trego. 6 balls, 6 boundaries and things aren't quite the same. James Hildreth is also settling in and the Morkel, Kallis attack is not an attack with the same venom - as the Somerset men decide to fight back. The 100 arrives with a Hildreth six and both men reach 50 with Peter's coming off 32 balls with 10 fours and his partner going to a more sedate half ton off 58 balls with 8 fours and a six.
The 150 arrives off 155 balls in 115 minutes and it is 165 for 4 off 28 overs at lunch. We think this is a 100 over an innings match so the status quo is pretty much restored. Somerset's session? More like a session of two halves! But excellent belligerant attacking batting from Mr Trego!!
Sorry. I've written this whole report Twice and I'm not doing it again. Both times it has been lost by the wifi re-setting.
Needless to say Trigger and Hilda played well and Craig Meschede brought up the rear with an excellent 50 before Hildreth called the men in at the end of the 64th with 312 runs. All of us I am sure hope the injury to Mark Boucher is not as serious as it might be but look for the call up of Thamitsobekile to cover the gloves.
28 overs at the South Africans was a decent call when James Overton took Rudolph at the end of the 6th and then Gemaal got Smith in the same way (caught behind by Barrow) at the start of the 7th. Presently the score has just passed 50 (off 76 balls in 54 minutes) and Peter Trego is just coming on to Amla and Kallis at the River end for the 14th over.
The side taking the field for Somerset for the South Afriucan innings is;
Hildreth (C), Suppiah, Compton, Meschede, Leach, Hussain, Barrow (W), Trego, Jones, Overton J and Overton C
No more real problems after that as the 90 overs are completed with Pete Trego and Craig Overton taking over the bowling duties. By the close (24 overs bowled 76 of the South African innings to come) the visitors have moved the score on to 96 for 2 with Kallis on 45 and Amla on 34. A good day in a no name game but it was fun to watch and full of interest.
Not sure how much we'll enjoy tomorrow because to be honest the two men presently in don't look in any real trouble - but who knows, early morning dew and anything could happen.

Just to let anyone who is planning on going to this know, the BBC red button text fixture list has this match at starting at 10am. Checked on Cricinfo future fixtures and this is also the time listed there.

Well,no idea what analysis he'll produce but I'd certainly think that Hussain should be given a very long bowl indeed.
In the form he was in at Lord's he'd have struggled for wickets even back on his Bristol green-tops.
So we'd better do our damnedest to bowl him into some form.

Given we have a week off bar 2 one day games and many of our guys could benefit from refocusing on the longer form before Wed 18th i'm not sure it's as suitable an option as it was last year.
We have Alex, Chris, Arul, James, Jos, Tregs, Lewis, Mesch and even Compo who could all benefit from time in the middle before next week.

I can tell you one thing the sightscreen is a long way over on the east side, it looks in the area of the women's pitch. there is a white sheet on part of the cow shed.

Most interesting thing to me about the team is who is named as captain - although I suspect this may be more because Alf will play a part-time bowling role and be off the field a lot of the time.

£20+ for those paying seems a bit steep for a jolly jolly "friendly". Even football teams don't try that on for pre-season friendlies, do they???

I like the selection approach. Our lads have soemthing to play for which is good.
Personal pride is the only thing to play for and remember batters will probably get one chance whereas bowlers get 6 chances every over.
Only Platinum members get admission to the tourist game Mike - Rob like me will have Championship membership (ie LVCC and CB40 matches only).

You are talking about one of the best club teams in the world playing the 2nd best International team in the world. Think Arsenal v Italy, think you could get into that for £20?

Well railboy I don't know ypur financial situation but it's a lot to pay for me especially for something that used to be free.If you reread my posting you will see that with peak transport costs I would be paying £36.70 per day.
I do attend where possible every day of championship and CB40 games and the tourist game was a bonus for showing loyalty.

As for my other point, I don't dispute that it is a lot of money and you have my sympathy regarding public transport costs - scandelous. The point I was trying to make is that watching cricket at Taunton (or indeed any other First Class grounds) represents good value for money when compared with watching other World Class sport.

Choice of coverage for anyone who can listen - our home-grown Somerset coverage including the return of the prodigal Grockle via the website, or BBC on digital radio - 5Live sports extra - from 9.45am (Kevin Howells who is one of the best county commentators for the BBC along with Steve Snell - who should be able to recognise the Somerset players!)

That sounds horribly like the accident that ruined Paul Downton's career, but I hope Boucher's case is much less serious and that he recovered speedily.

The trophy is awarded to the fastest century ie in the fewest number of balls (excluding wides) scored in the County Championship, 40- and 20-over formats, as well as Tests, ODIs and T20Is held played in England (I assume they would include Wales in that!). Since 1996 MCCU matches have been excluded for qualification; there is a separate trophy for the fasted 100 scored by an MCCU player in matches between the universities, or those against the counties.
Last year's winner was Somerset's sometimes-maligned Kevin O'Brien with a 44-ball century for Gloucestershire against Middlesex in the T20.
Even if this match was considered for qualification - the conditions do not mention tourist matches, but they do say "there is a panel of adjudicators to ensure that each potential award-winning century is made against authentic bowling". Whilst it would be hard to argue that an attack of Steyn, Morkel, Tsotsebe, Kallis and Tahir is anything but authentic, they may baulk at the idea of awarding a trophy for a performance in a match where 14 plays 13.
Having said that the argument is academic since Eoin Morgan made 100 off 49 balls as Misslesex beat Lancashire in the CB40 at Lord's last month.

Not there today I'm afraid.... there didn't seem to be much to see today as the 20 odd overs yesterday after the first two wickets went down for South Africa there didn't seem a lot of hope of any kind of 'result'.
Having said that, there wasn't much promise in yesterday until Pete came in and changed the game. Excellent aggressive batting against the great and the good of SA. James was a little more circumspect but still confidently moved to three figures. Good solid and well managed 50 by Craig Meschede at the end as well.

With 3 under 150 Tests and well over 200 ODI's SA will miss the man. Such a sad way to bow out, so close to two majore targets (the dismiaals referred to later and 150 Tests).
A great servant to his country and an absolute swine to play against on so many occasions. It's a great compliment to a player when opponents sigh with relief when you aren't playing at the age of 35 odd.

Who's that spring chicken in the first picture? Presumably he's another highly promising seventeen-year old from the Academy. I reckon he'll have a great career.
