Barmy Kev reports with help of other comments on a painful day. This reports carries a MTWD health warning.
The day starts off with predictions with a poll of 10 of us when we should declare. The targets we set vary between 370 and 400. We all know what happened at the end and it didn't really make much difference. Nobody wanted us to bat them out of game and have a bore draw
When Simmo is bowled early on Way out West says good news it nipped back, there's something in the pitch for us. Later Way Out West Senior states not looking good as we are getting boundaries with ease there's nothing in pitch. We declare with 386 needed off 86 which was one away from Seaxe Man's prediction
With Notts score 32 0 from 5 overs Barmy Kev asks is anyone nervous? Phil the Power says yes. Way Out West fancies an early trip to Trent Bridge Inn and Lower Pavilion is still optimistic. 65 0 after10 Kev shouts I'd take a draw. At lunch 108 0 off 18 no body is saying a word. A liquid lunch with Way out West with his Senior at Trent Bridge Inn. We wanted to get back for resumption with WOW tempted to stay for another pint to buy us 3 wickets or was it 3 pints to buy us one? We returned and run rate dropped but not a sniff of wicket.
At this stage I will state 3 irritating kinds of behaviour around us. Every run was loudly cheered from Notts players in Pavilion including loud applause for a TRJ mishap which was most unsporting. Also an old man just kept turning round looking at us every time they scored a boundary. There was a dropped catch at crucial time with my hands in head a Notts fan turned round smiling saying " well what do you think of that".
WOW says please bring on Ravi for 5 wickets. It was at the point where Lower Pavilion refused to comment on whether we should be optimistic. Ravi was eventually on and forced Jacques to hit high for something different he was caught by TRJ in deep. As we cheered someone said to be me not sure trying to be funny "there are only one kind of laws in this country the Outlaws." I said what about the in laws?"
Another cheer run rate is below 5 and more tight bowling from Hi Fi and Ravi ii's around 4.5. With two 20 20 specialists in there are accelerating and is getting away from us again. A dropped catch by Hales in slips was a big blow. Luckily not crucial as Ravi got him LBW soon after. TRJ bowling without slips to fours through slips doesn't help our mood. At tea 154 needed off 37 with just 2 wickets down. There is not an optimistic voice in the room.
When Lumb out for impressive 68 there was barely a whimper amongst us. An anon person said "Lumbs to the slaughter" no one laughed. Patel soon out off bowling of Patel caught Rogers to slightly more than a whimper. That's as good as it got. Way out West is on way out to Nottingham races. Stirlo was off with finger injury Denly bought on to bowl I give up and checking train times to leave Nottingham. As I'm leaving Beefy texts Moggy is bowling.
To think 505 first innings and that first day, I am struggling to be positive right now and feel completely deflated. The attitude of some Notts fans today did not help. However, I appreciated the varied company I was in for the 4 days and the hospitality of the Notts staff. I hope for better Middlesex days ahead.

None of us like cocky away supporters, do we?
Maybe you were all a bit too loud when things were going our way, and the home supporters were happy to see us get our comeuppance.

It was a Hand day for me and I couldn't believe what I was hearing. That was really painful. Surely this is, if not the final nail in the coffin, then one of them for our title chances. We need to start putting a run of wins together.

I am always careful how to conduct myself online and in person when commenting on other teams.
I still believe Middlesex are in the race for the County Championship title, as the current table on Cricinfo shows we are in third and six points off top spot, although Somerset are a point in front with a game in hand and Yorkshire will leap us after their present match v Yorkshire at Arundel unless the unlikely event occurs of them picking up no more batting points and they lose the match.

Good report, which I think reflected very well the mood of the day. I have to confess I clearly misjudged what was happening today and my optimism proved to be totally wrong.
I was at all 4 days of this game, and in all the the large number of years I haver followed Middlesex, I have never seen a game like this one.
The bottom line is that we lost the toss, were put in, and we scored 505 runs. At the end of our first innings I am absolutely certain there was not one person at the ground who thought we would lose.
However, all credit to Notts. Their batsman in their second innings, it has to be said, made our much heralded bowling attack look very ordinary indeed and in the end they won with plenty to spare and with some ease.
Finally, the MTWD contingent including myself were sitting for all 4 days just below both teams balcony.
I for one have never heard such a constant noise coming from in this case the home team during their second innings, including what I thought, though I stand to be corrected,loud applause etc on at least one occasion, when one of our players miss fielded the ball on the boundary. This is not perhaps unusual amongst ordinary spectators and members but rather more so from players I think.

As this thread goes away from a sticky and I have calmed down I'd just like to restate how inaccurate the above speculative post is.
I also feel it is wrong when someone takes the trouble to submit a match report for the benefit of our readers to question their or group's integrity. But then again that's how I have been bought up.
Well there must be some reason.

I can recall a few years back a game at Lords v Kent. Half a dozen Kent fans were seated two rows behind me. They didn't deliberately set out to be offensive, I'm sure, but six hours of listening to how wonderful Kent was, and loud 'Commom Kent' every time they scored a boundary did get a bit tiresome to say the least.
Now- to clarify- I'm not suggesting any of you deliberately set out to annoy- but a group of 10 away supporters, even if they are not grossly out of order, can nevertheless irritate. Therefore always a good idea to remember to pass the odd complimentary remark about some Notts players if you know their supporters are within earshot.

Finally- did Diamond buy you all a drink with the extra £20 I sent him? I didn't realise there would be ten of you, so I guess £2 each didn't go very far- but it's the thought that counts.
With regards to claiming money that isn't rightfully yours- You miss that lovely warm feeling inside of knowing you've done the right thing when you hand it back to the person who would otherwise have been out of pocket.
But then again that's how I've been brought up.

I’ve been following the discussion on this and other threads about the alleged attitudes of Middlesex supporters at Nottingham and what to do in coffee shops regarding change.
Without getting too philosophical it is a human trait to jump on high horses and make judgements without knowing full facts. The trouble with a high horse is that it is very easy to fall off and it usually hurts at that height. "Judge not so you are not judged" has survived hundreds of years for a reason.

I have what I call 'psychological arachnophobia', which means I have a fear of my confidence getting high in case something then goes wrong, thus causing me to subsequently feel low. Therefore, in my quest for employment, I am reluctant to feel high whenever I hear I have got an interview, as I know I will feel really disappointed if the interview goes badly.

Personally, I find it irritating whenever I overhear supporters of opposition teams talking about how good their team's position is in a match, so I am not surprised Nottinghamshire supporters felt that way about Middlesex supporters.
Sussex v Yorkshire was indeed a draw, so although our defeat at Trent Bridge means we are now fourth, we are still very much part of the leading pack, and are far from out of the title race.

Just to add some balance to this. For 3 days there was some good natured banter and fans/ staff were most hospitable.
A couple of fans on day 4 chose to rub our noses in it. Something I and would not expect any Middlesex fans to do if roles were reversed. On saying that as I was leaving feeling disconsolate one Notts fan said hard luck and wished me a safe journey home. He was obviously well bought up.

For the most part I found the Notts fans appreciative of the good cricket of both sides.
They certainly stood and applauded Buck's 180 and Moggy's 191.
There will always be an edge between people supporting opposite teams. Just as you would expect.

Why can't supporters and or players celebrate wickets or good shots?
In our number we have very vocal fans who sing and chant so why can't the oppo fans?
I was at Trent bridge on the Sunday and agree with everyone else that the staff & fans of notts were very friendly & welcoming throughout. Plenty of applause from both sets of fans for wickets, good shots and milestones such as a 50 etc

In my opinion if you are sat somewhere at a ground and those around you are loud, drunk, boring or talking about their team then why don't you move somewhere quieter, after all they are big grounds with plenty of seats to use.

You see, if someone writes a report, and mentions something, you have a right to comment on it. I mean- as several of your number have commented on this, I'm entitled to ask 'So why would they behave like this?' must be some reason. Or maybe they haven't been brought up properly.

Everyone is within their rights within message board rules to comment on reports even if its critical. However,
If you are going to make assumptions that are derogatory to our fans at game and reporter expect a backlash

I have only just seen this thread as I have had to work for the past week!
I went to notts Sat and Sun and it was no different to any other county game i have been too!
There was a few chants from both teams fans either when wickets fell or boundary's made, but certainly not everyone! (Chunky, if you were able to come to many games we tend to leave that for one day games, and if there are a number of us!)
We as the fans who went to notts last year knew that there was a set of notts fans who sit in front of the pavilion, they are lovely and of all ages, who like a bit of singing and banter and it was good fun!! One or two had certain medical conditions, of which WE were aware!
However the main reason we sat in the pavilion is because some of us are physically incapacitated! Those who were there (and those affected) know who they are, but we needed somewhere to sit which was close to the amenities.

I think some teams try to create a siege mentality whereby they fire themselves up by getting it into their head that their opponents are bad people in order to give themselves motivation. That often explains why an opponent may have a startling amount of passion, and perhaps Nottinghamshire did this. For some reason, the teams I support seldom employ a siege mentality, although it is obvious that some opponents do.
I would be gutted if chunky leaves MTWD temporarily or permanently, so hopefully it won't happen.

Vermin Corner derived from Vic at Uxbridge saying to us that we were always in the corner by the pavilion under the umbrellas.
Someone remarked that we were always around,just like vermin,hence vermin corner was christened.

I think it's worth mentioning that will be a 4 day report in Middlesex Matters from one of our crowd and the brief is to not make it too cricket orientated. Our Chief Executive and Chairman spent some time sitting with us at TB. While I accept perhaps some of us are not everyone's cup of tea for cricket company our club certainly think we are doing something right with our support.
