50 not enough

Ken makes his debut reporting on a grim day for Middlesex on the events surrounding an inevitable defeat. More frustratation as Holder does not give us a decision and annoying fans ,another bad train journey and where was Kev? Read on...
Beefy and myself arrive at the ground early for the start of day
3,with bags of pasties from the local baker.Kev is on his way.I point
out to Beefy the Gloucetsershire fan wearing a Paul McCartney tour
shirt,he just grumbles to himself as usual!
Its overcast and muggy as Roland-Jones takes 1st over and Beefy is
happy at buying a coffee at members price, after he moaned about the
price structure yesterday.
Looking around the field,there is no Pedro following his injury the
day before,Kirby is caught by Scott Newman off Smiths bowling,we both
miss the wicket,yet again,its 419-9.The innings is completed by 11.25 as
Ireland is caught by Malan off Roland-Jones bowling.
Sam Robson/Scott Newman open the 2nd innings,with Kirby bowling
from the Jessop Stand end,Newman soon goes for 4,as the PA announced '
Judged LBW' and it was Holder yet again.Shah in at 3,Kev arrives at
midday and Beefy goes for his first wicket break, but,a shock as no
wicket fell!
Sam Robson is caught Batty b Lewis for 12,and Malan comes in at
4,its not looking good at the moment.Kev is drinking Orange juice maybe
suffering a little i wonder?At lunch its 65-2,few rumblings about no 4th
day etc.
After lunch,Shah is soon caught by Batty off Lewis for 32 Dexter
comes in at 5,No Kev as yet after lunch,in the pub i wonder? Or in an
internet cafe?
We are booked on the 1930 train back,the way its going we will have
a long wait as wickets tumble easily, Malan is next out,caught behind
and Kev returns,he soon takes over from Beefy doing wicket breaks,and
missed Malan going,must be catching wicket breaks.
Dexter is batting well and time will make him a good leader and
captain,he reaches his deserved 50 to tremendous applause from the
crowd,50 off 38 balls with 10x4's.
OB is busying himself doing bit of commentary with Kevin Hand then
disaster as Dexter is out with the score on 141-5,Beefy throws his paper
down in disgust as Holder gives yet another LBW this time its Simpson
out,Kev stamps on my notebook at same time!
There should be another wicket soon,bowling from the newly named
Holder end,but that can be both ends., Kev tries a very bad rain dance and
heads to the bar to watch the tennis. Kev re-appears to announce he is
going home at tea,and can Beefy text the score but don't depress me with
every wicket please. At tea we reach 181-6,during this time,Bergie does
some stretches and bowls a few balls,good news for all at the Middle and
we hope he is back for the next game,he also runs a lap of the ground.
After tea,Davey is out caught behind by Batty off first ball of the
over its 181-7 as Murts comes in,Smith soon goes and Toby comes in,hits
a lovely 6 into the corporate tent,wakes them all up. Murts soon goes
as well, we all think that's it,innings over as Pedro walks slowly to the
crease,more like a limp,he is clearly not fit,so why come out to
bad,because he is MTWD.Toby is soon bowled and we are 228 all out,a
lead of 44.
We stand up for the 10 mins between innings then iT
happens........a knock from the window behind by a member who wants us
to move,this is before a ball is bowled,Beefy shouts to them to shut up
and come outside to watch!
Needing 45 to win,they soon get to 7-0 off 2 overs,wont be long
before we lose.No Pedro as Bergie fields again,Then Murts to Kadeer-Ali
,an appeal to Holder for LBW,ha,ha you got no chance!
We decide when it gets to 10 to win,start to move back to town for
train home,they reach 26 off 10 overs,as Josh misfields and gifts them 4
over throws we decide to leave.
As we leave the ground,two guys who have been playing squash ask
Beefy if we had won,he said no mate,replied whoops,wrong side,sorry!
Going back,yet more train trouble!!,Train to Reading was fine,then
train to local station was delayed,no driver had turned up! You can
always get travel trouble watching Middlesex,but,its all part of the fun
of being MTWD.

Thanks Ken on your first report. Very good. As you guessed day 3 I was distracted by many events elsewhere , but don't feel I missed much.

Is far as Holder is concerned I was at Derby in 1997 when the home county were playing the Australians.
Warne appealed to Holder for LBW against that nice Mr Adams, when from the boundary it certainly sounded like ball on wood. Adams was given out and made his feelings very clear to Holder. Adams's boorish behaviour earned him a fine from the club. It may have been a mistake from Vanburn, and it was probably not his last.

I think this will be Vanburn Holder's last season as an umpire as he turns 65 in October.
He first umpired in 1988, but was never judged good enough to stand in a senior international. Some umpires progress to international matches within just a few years of starting the job.

Yes JW, this is his last season, but he seems to have received sufficient positive marks over the seasons to have survived in the job since his appointment in 1992.
He was a fine bowler and is a perfectly decent umpire.
All umpires, like players, make bad decisions at times and have bad days.
We were mauled by Glos because we played substandard cricket.

I hate to disagree with my fellow moderator who had a Ceefax view but there were some shocking decisions against us. Dext in 1st innings dreadful. Those there will surely back me up.
On saying that even without these with our 2nd string attack we would have still lost and maybe were spared a 4th day.
