A Desperately-Needed Roses Success

Struggling Yorkshire fought back tremendously to easily overcome struggling Lancashire. At stumps on day one, a home win seemed highly unlikely. The hosts had been knocked over cheaply for the umpteenth time. Then, to make matters worse, the red rose put on one hundred for their first wicket. However it then began to unravel for the visitors. They did a very good impersonation of the Yorkshire skittles, and indeed we discovered that Lancashire's batting is even more fragile than Yorkshire's.

Fortunately in this potential relegation decider, the home team found a quartet of players who rose above the mediocrity of les autres, and in so doing the contributions of Ballance, Brooks, the returning Coad, and the in-form Kohler-Cadmore proved to be decisive.

All that remains now is for Lancashire to fail to win their last match against Hampshire and for Yorkshire to avoid defeat against bottom of the table Worcestershire. Or better still, the Tykes need one win from their two remaining engagements. This will ensure another season at the top table. Whatever the outcome, a root and branch clear out of the playing staff and dressing room head honchos is very much called for amongst the county's concerned patrons.

YORKSHIRE versus Lancashire; in Leeds; Monday the tenth to Thursday the thirteenth of September. Lancashire chose to bowl.

YORKSHIRE first innings: 209 (Kohler-Cadmore 105*; Onions 4-76, Bailey 3-18, Gleeson 3-74)

Lancashire first innings: 252 (Davies 87; Brooks 5-66)

YORKSHIRE second innings: 272 (Ballance 85, Kohler-Cadmore 63; Bailey 4-69, Maharaj 3-52)

Lancashire second innings: 134 (Coad 5-24, Brooks 4-47)

YORKSHIRE win by 95 runs. YORKSHIRE twenty points, Lancashire five points.

Lyth - Caught behind for scores of sixteen and then seven was yet another pitiful return for this veteran. His performances belong in the second division.

Raval - Jeet is proving to be another disappointing import. His two puny efforts amounted to eight runs and then an innings of ten runs. This is far too inadequate.

Brook - Harry was twice dismissed by Tom Bailey for three and then five. He may be one for the future, but regrettably he's not exactly one for the present.

Ballance - The discarded England batsman shared in a crucial 148-run fourth wicket partnership in the second innings. Yorkshire still rely far too heavily upon him.

Kohler-Cadmore - Nobody is trying quite like Tom to keep the Tykes from sliding into a lower league. His superb ton featured seventeen boundaries in three hours.

Tattersall - Jonny weighed in with a useful thirty-three, followed by twenty-two second time around, as well as claiming several catches. He's acquitting himself well.

Bresnan - Tim didn't exactly hit the heights. He was out for a duck and then made a gritty two-hour twenty. He took two wickets, costing a total of 75 runs.

Waite - Matthew's thirteen overs cost a mere eighteen runs which was highly commendable. He did however succumb cheaply to Graham Onions for a duck and 15.

Patterson - The captain was unlucky to end up with no wickets. His characteristically accurate bowling amounted to sixty-three runs conceded from 31 overs.

Brooks - The headband warrior signed out of his last Roses tussle with heaps of wickets. Nine scalps from thirty-two overs represented a very healthy strike rate.

Coad - Ben returned just in the nick of time to save the Tykes. His outstanding bowling in both innings was a reminder that he's far too good for the second division.
