After the lord mayor's show of arriving back home to where we belong: the top flight in English cricket, our first peformance back amongst the elite did indeed prove to be a case of after the lord mayor's show.
Yorkshire managed to journey the whole way through the second tier last year without being beaten once. However, after losing the toss in our opening engagement with Sussex, our subsequent cricket went from bad to worse. To be bowled out for ninety-six in our first innings was simply inexcusable, and thereafter it was merely a case of how much that we would lose by rather than would we lose at all? The batting failures of Gale and Lees certainly belong in the hall of shame.
Oh well, Tykes, onwards and upwards, and a dramatic improvement in performance is much required against our lovely northern neighbours, Durham. Failing that, it could prove to be a long season of under-achievement. Mind you, after our depressing innings defeat at home to Sussex, it is a case of things can only get better.....Or can they?! Below follows the match scores, mercifully summarised. For those of a Yorkshire disposition, it may be time to go and hide behind the sofa.
YORKSHIRE versus SUSSEX; 10th-13th April; at Headingley; Sussex won the toss
Yorkshire first innings: 96 [Jordan 6-48]
