For the second time in three days, the Yorkshire Vikings narrowly came up short in a Twenty20 encounter. With Durham cruelly securing a final-over triumph against the Tykes, the white rose will now need to probably string together about seven wins in this competition if they are to entertain hopes of reaching the knockout stages.
The Vikings actually made a better start than they 'accomplished' against Derbyshire the other night, as Gale and Lyth added fifty runs for the first wicket. Regrettably, the hosts failed to build upon this commendable start and even captain Gale succumbed for 34, when he looked set to record twice as much. In the end, a total just shy of 150 looked considerably more competitive than the puny 119 accumulated on Friday night past.
However, that pesky old Durham bunch timed their run chase to perfection, although they were in slight danger of sailing a bit close to the wind. In spite of the best efforts of Jack Brooks who bowled a maiden over and who has bowled reasonably well in our first two Twenty20 engagements, the visitors just about got over the finishing line, assisted in no small part by a fine fifty from the experienced Phil Mustard.
This heartbreaking defeat teaches the Tykes that only a score in excess of 150 is likely to prove sufficient in this tournament. Unless they can address that blemish and obviously improve their bowling, then they will quickly be relegated to the status of also rans in this summer's Twenty20 circus.
