A Drawn Encounter In Wales

Mister Pyrah

The Yorkshire second XI recovered from the early setback of their one-day loss in Cardiff to earn themselves an honourable draw in their opening skirmish of the Second XI Championship, also against Glamorgan.

Originally, the hosts won the toss and elected to field first, a choice that was clearly vindicated when they dismissed the Tykes' second string for a mere 211. Nobody could even reach a half century as Owen recorded figures of three for thirty-two.

In reply, Glamorgan fell one run short of the Yorkshire first-innings total, despite a decent knock of sixty runs from the tailender, Will Owen. Meanwhile, Richard Pyrah impressed for the away team with an encouraging haul of five wickets for a loss of only 29 runs from 18.2 overs.

Yorkshire's batsmen then awoke from their slumbers as all-rounder Jack Leaning contributed an unbeaten eighty while Andrew Hodd weighed in with 67 runs. Declaring on 240 for six, the visitors set the home team 242 to win, which proved to be a stiff target.

Although the captain Ben Wright managed a fine 67, the rest of his team almost folded as four Yorkshire bowlers helped themselves to a brace of wickets each. In the end, Yorkshire had to make do with a draw. Another hour's play would surely have brought an away win, but c'est la vie. A few of our players will have provided a good commercial for their talents while our top order batsmen need to produce much more in subsequent outings.
