All-rounder Peter Trego joins an ever-increasing list of batsmen who will have fond memories of playing and indeed slaying Yorkshire in one-day matches during the warm and wet summer of 2013. Trego's unbeaten 140 ensured that Somerset would complete a forty-overs double over a Yorkshire team that now specialise in narrow limited-overs defeats.
Well it wasn't all pain for the visitors as the three Ls: Leaning, Lees, and Lyth all helped themselves to half centuries. This was Alex Lees' second limited-overs fifty of the week, which is a cause for encouragement while Leaning also adds his sixty to a five-wicket haul from two days ago, so it isn't entirely doom and gloom. Having said all that, the Tykes presumably cannot get back to the four-day format quick enough as this year is the reverse of 1983. Back then, the white rose finished bottom of the County Championship and peculiarly top of the olde Sunday League, under the supervision of fifty-year-old Raymond Illingworth. Fast-forwarding to 2013, we could point to the absences of Ballance, Bairstow, Bresnan, Jaques, Plunkett, and Root, but such has been Yorkshire's misfortunes in the one-dayers of late that had they fielded marvel comic superheroes, they would still have succumbed to a narrow reverse. C'est la vie. "That's cricket, Harry."
Oh well. The locals will rightfully toast the impressive batting of Trego (and Petersen) while the Vikings flee up north, safe in the knowledge that there is only one forty-overs contest (and inevitable defeat) left to act out.
